Should gay marriage be protected by the national government?

Gay marriage was originally legalised in 2007 in the United States, which caused a lot of backlash. Do you think this was a correct decision to make?

You can also comment on what you think should be the extent of this protection in place. Like if you think you can get married to someone of the same gender, but no churches or courts are obligated to marry you, for example.

I personally believe that marriage should be a right that a court cannot reject, but that a church, synagogue or mosque cannot be forced to hold or legitimise this marriage within their building.

I think marriage should be a religious thing but the benefits one gets legally should be labeled something different

I don't think legal contracts should matter in a healthy marriage, but the benefits behind a contract should be open to everyone, even queer couples.

Like I said in my earlier comment, gay marriage should be protected by the government- I’m just implying I dislike the governments involvement in any marriage. My marriage is extremely emotionally and financially healthy, but I dislike the fact that the government can butt-in and decide who gets what and so fourth if something went south, more often than not I’ve seen one spouse on the short end of the stick.

I’m not a fan of government involvement in marriages to begin with, but since we have it setup the way we do, everyone should have access to it (except for minors + adults or adults + animals or so fourth, it should be between 2 consenting adults, 3 or more consenting adults if we wanna be inclusive to the Mormons and people who are polygamous)

I believe that gay marriage should be protected by the national government, but I think homosexuality is a sin (just like any other sin, I don’t think people who are gay are “bad”, we all have our different sin issues) and a church / pastor that does not want to marry them in marriage due to that violating the churches / pastors beliefs should not be forced to marry them.

That being said, same legal rights should be given. If they wanna adopt, I have bo issue as long as they have a friend / family member of the opposite sex to be a good influence (ie helping a young man or woman develop key relationships) (I also hold this stance with single parents, I feel single parents should have a friend / family member of opposite sex to help be a good influence- I didn’t get enough male influence as a child)

Even with the argument for civil unions. The main thing that makes marriage so important for everyone to have the right to is that it comes with certain legal rights like if a loved one is in the hospital or something and certain people can see them such as immediate family

If it’s a thing that government is involved with for straight couples then gay people should get the same services. Whether or not government should have a huge role is a whole nother can of worms which I’m not prepared or qualified to talk about
