Merry Meet!
This theory is based purely of my own musings and myself/my astrology. I have no clue if it is representative of the general population, but I would be very interested to learn below in the comments what people have to think and whether or not my theory applies for them.
First, I’m going to explain a belief that will come up at the end of this. The idea that people live multiple lives/rebirths. Maybe for no reason, maybe because a soul needs to learn things, whatever it may be. But the idea is people will be reborn in new lives. You don’t have to believe it personally but my theory won’t make sense unless you keep this as a possibility in your mind.
Now onto something completely different— but that idea above.
So, modality is a concept in astrology. Similar to how there are four groups of elements in astrology, there are three groups of modality. These are: Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable.
Similar to how each of the 12 zodiac signs are divided among the four elemental groups, the 12 signs are also divided among the three modalities.
Cardinal Signs: Aries, Libra, Cancer, Capricorn
Fixed Signs: Leo, Aquarius, Scorpio, Taurus
Mutable Signs: Sagittarius, Gemini, Pisces, Virgo
If you notice, each modality has one sign from each element. Likewise, every element grouping has one sign from each modality.

There is a theory of modality as the three acts of life. This site portrays this understanding of the modalities through examining how "Astrology follows the four seasons, which correspond to the four elements, and each of these three-month-long seasons is comprised of a beginning, middle, and end."
Cardinal modality is supposed to represent beginnings. Action; dynamic; initiative; great force. These are the energies of the cardinal modality. Fixed signs represent the middle, the sustaining part. Resistance to change; great willpower; inflexible. These are the energies of the fixed modality. The mutable modality represents endings, release. Adaptability; flexible; resourceful. These are the energies of the mutable modality.
My theory takes it one step further. Rather than just expressing the three acts within life, what about beyond life? If you believe in something like the multi-life system I mentioned above, imagine these three acts being three phases your soul an be categorized as throughout your soul’s journey? The beginning, a new soul; the middle, sustaining yourself and experience; the end, release gradually from the physical world, wisdom and total surrender to the universe.
I have an app called Horos (screenshot above) which shows you which modality you have the most of and thus. For me, I mostly have fixed signs in my natal chart, followed by mutable signs. I think this relates to how I have always felt that, in my soul’s journey, I was about 2/3s through; that I had an old soul but not so old that I was almost done with my cycle. But definitely more than half way through. I feel my modalities reflect this.
Let me know what you modality percentages/ratios are and whether that relates to how old your soul feels! I would love to either have my theory validated or utterly destroyed. Either way, I learn ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
