I’ve been thinking about this lately because I noticed how often these questions get asked:

What do I need to make a spell?

What preparations do I have to make?

Why is the spell not working?

This post seeks to address these questions by dissecting the process of creating magic through spell craft.

Knowing the process gives us the power to understand what went right, what went wrong, and the means to identify what changes need to be made for effective spell work.

There’s a well known adage that goes something like this:

Like anything else worth gaining, magical manifestation has a price. If you want your spells to work, you need to do your part to show the Universe/Spirit/God/Goddess/Source that “yes!” you’re worth it and you deserve to manifest your dreams into life because you’ve put in the work and now you’re ready to see some divine intervention happenin’!

Thoughts on Tools of the Trade

When I started out my studies, I was fixated on looking for the “perfect” tools, believing that it has to be this way or that for my spell/ritual to be effective. All or nothing, I thought.

I’ve come to realize now that each tool is just an object, every spell a hollow verse, intent is just a wish until you make it YOURS. Your focus. What makes each of these components magical is the power you imbue them with through the aid of your divine guides and your own personal energy, both in the magical and mundane sense.

Spell Crafting =

Goal/Purpose + Method

Spell crafting has two major components. A goal or purpose (this is the outcome) and method of conducting magical energy (this is the process by which you achieve the outcome).

I. Goal or Purpose

• To draw toward (bring something to you)

• To repel against (banish, cast away)

• To contain (deflect, reflect, return to sender)

• To shield or protect (yourself, your space - physically and psychically)

II. Methods of Magic

• Sympathetic•

visualizing actions performed with/to/for an object or thing during a spell as having the exact effect on another object/thing

Examples:

- pouring a bowl of water outside to mimic rain fall when casting a spell to bring rain

- creating a poppet representation of a person to focus healing energy upon

- drawing a dollar sign on a piece of paper to represent real world money coming to you

• Comparative •

establishing a connection between two objects/things and making it the focus of your spell work

Examples:

- creating and wearing a self-love charm in which you enhance your connection with the sweet aspects of yourself represented by the contents of the bottle/sachet

- planting a seed to represent the growth and development of a skill, a business, a relationship

- burning incense to purify your space, visualizing that as the incense burns, so does the negativity along with it going up in smoke

• Directive •

directing energy using herbs, crystals, candles, tools, effigies etc. to achieve a purpose

Examples:

- using certain herbs to dress candles corresponding to one’s purpose/intent

- burying a protection jar/bottle to draw and contain negative energy, preventing it from entering the home

- brewing tea using herbs specific to your purpose (lucid dreams, astral travel, psychic awareness, healing, etc.)

• Transference •

typically used in protection spells wherein undesired energy is absorbed and held by an object (mild intensity transference) or a plant/animal/person (strong intensity transference)

It is worth mentioning that only skilled practitioners attempt stronger intensity transference magics because of ethical and moral safety. It can and will cause harm, illness, and even death if serious considerations are not made. With that in mind, my focus is on mild intensity and below are some examples.

- hanging a braid of garlic in your kitchen to absorb unwanted energy

- creating a sleep sachet to ward off bad dreams

- making a blessing bowl with salt and herbs to absorb negativity from your space

SPELLing It Out

Each portion below is part of a blueprint you can use to craft any spell, it focuses your actions from start to finish. These steps are guideposts, use them as you will and tailor it to your needs (according to your own moral com and ethical considerations).

I have this in outline form for the sake of clarity (and my own sanity, lol). Record keeping of your own style and taste totally encouraged. This just helps organize ideas, focus thoughts, clarify intentions, and direct energy exactly where it needs to be.

1. Identify your goal or purpose

2. Decide what type of magic is appropriate

3. Gather relevant supplies (herbs, gems/crystals, effigies, candles, divination tools etc.), and magical tools according to correspondences specific to your spell

4. Consider the timing with regard to moon phases, cosmic events (ie. eclipse), time of day, day of the week, hour of day. Also, the method of raising energy: chanting, dancing, singing, breathing, or gestures

5. Ask the help of your guides/deities or use divination for inspiration, reassurance, or clarity if you feel uncertain or need that extra boost

6. Solidify your intent by writing a clear and focused outcome that is positive, certain, and speak as though you already OWN it.

E.g. “I am free from anxiety” instead of “I don’t want to be anxious”

7. Incorporate your intention into your spell. It is customary to compose in rhyme because words have vibration and frequency, the cadence in which it is spoken creates energy and makes it come alive! (But if you’re not feeling poetic, I feel that all words coming from your soul is just as effective)

8. Create your magical aid/representation to help manifest your purpose. Such as an inscribed/dressed candle, amulet, talisman, poppet, herbal potions/sachets/tea/potpourri, charms or mojo bags

9. Once you have everything you need, you’re ready to cast your spell by itself or as part of your ritual, how ever you prefer (ie. Cleanse your sacred space (physical, mental, spiritual) and ground you casting a circle or calling quarters/elementals/guides/spirits, indoor or outdoor, simple or grand - the choice is yours)

Every path has its own traditions and ways to accomplish the same thing. As with any crafting skill, the more you practice, the more you hone in on your personal style of magic.

You will feel it in your body, your senses, your spirit that you are accessing not only your inner power, but tapping into the infinite energy of the universe.

The MOST important part of the spell is YOU!

When a spell does not work, it is either a lack of preparation and understanding of the energies you’re working with or you are not truly believing in your own power to create change. TRUST in yourself, then refocus and overcome the obstacles. Every hurdle you cross makes you stronger and wiser, getting you that much closer to more effectively manifesting your spells.

Be blessed in the light, in the dark, and all the shadows in between.
