First and Last and Always is the debut studio album by English rock band The Sisters of Mercy. It was released in March 1985.
The band was founded in 1980 by Andrew Eldritch and Gary Marx in Leeds. Up to 1983, the band produced five singles and two EPs, which were released on the band's own indie label Merciful Release and were distributed independently as well.
Despite Eldritch's highly vocal rejection of the designation "Goth", First and Last and Always has consistently been praised in the canon of gothic rock, and in December, 1999, Q magazine included it in their list of "The Best Gothic Albums of All Time".
