middle. His hair is long and dark, a mix of

curly and wavy, usually tied up or loose.

Uma bounced jobs in his early twenties. He

worked at a local grocery store for a while,

and at a couple of other places, one being a

bar and another a cook at a steakhouse,

but finally landed a job as an assistant to

the ing manager of a publications

company. He found good pay in it, good

hours that let him spend time with his

daughter, and benefits.

Uma moved to Illinois when he settled

down to adopt his daughter. He found a two

a fixer upper when he got it, he loves the

house and it works well for he and his

Good

While Uma’s health isn’t in perfect shape,

it’s better than what it had been for a long

time. He was injured in a severe car wreck

in his late teens. His back took the brunt of

the injury. He slipped a disk and cracked

one of his lower spinal columns. He spent

months in the hospital recovering,

relearning walking, and physical therapy.

But he gained full motion again, though

often has a stiff back, especially when the

weather changes.

very close to Soraya, and he looked up to

her greatly.

about Camilla at first, and it took Uma a

very long time to get close to Camilla. Uma

and Camilla are now very very close and he

views her as his mom.

Daichi and Uma were close when Uma was

young, but after Soraya’s death, Uma

became distant with his father. Daichi and

after Uma was injured in the car wreck,

their relationship got on the mend.

Ginna is a very confident individual. She is

close, and outside of Uma’s older brother

Eito she is his closest confidante.

Jeimy is much more like Camilla than

Ginna. She is gentle and kind, and often

babysits for Uma when he needs a break or

has to travel or stay late for work. Jeimy

works at a daycare, so often if Uma needs a

babysitter Amaia will spend the day with

her aunt Jeimy at her workplace.

Unlike her twin sister, Jeimy, and Ginna,

Nataly is not very close to the family. She

lives in Washington D.C. and is currently

enrolled in college studying Biomedical

Science. She only visits on holidays, but is

very much an introvert and doesn’t interact

with many people.

Eito and Uma are the closest out of all the

siblings. You can always count on them

being side by side anytime they are around.

Eito is very extroverted and life of the party

kind of guy. He and Uma would always get

into mischief together as kids but Eito has

always been ive of Uma and they

take care of each other. Eito has one child,

he and his wife’s first child, a newborn

baby girl named Soraya Jr., or little Aya.

Miyer Herrera | Alive | 25

Miyer is a short and loud man. He is the

‘class clown’ so to speak. Always into

something, very energetic, bachelor vibes.

He’s like one of the kids, and at any family

reunion he is usually the one to entertain

the grandchildren. He and Uma get along

pretty well, they have a similar sense of

humor and Miyer is a good guy deep down.

Gabriel Herrera | Alive | 28

Gabriel is a very prestigious man. He

always dresses in his nicest clothes, and

rarely speaks. He moves in an elegant and

poised manner, and holds himself to the

same standard. Gabriel is not very close to

the family, and has become even more

distant since his mother remarried.

Amaia is a rambunctious young girl. She is

full of life, and always on the go. She is

Uma’s whole life, and what takes up 99% of

his time and energy. Amaia had a hard start

to life. Her mother was neglectful and

Amaia was born premature and

malnourished. She was sent into foster

care, but Uma was her first and final

placement.

Rosie Davis | Alive | 53

Rosie is a paternal and lovely woman. She

is Uma’s absolute best friend. He met her

at work and she trained and guided him

there, and continues to do so in personal

endeavors, raising a daughter as a single

father can be challenging and there are

times when Uma feels like he isn’t meant to

be a parent, but Rosie is always there.

Amaia also adores her, and Rosie’s son,

Markus, often babysits for Uma as well

when Markus is home from college.

Uma and his older brother, Eito, had a

relatively normal childhood. Playtime,

school, etc. Things were good. His parents

were happy, they were financially stable,

and had a good home. Uma had a pleasant

childhood, nothing abnormal.

Things took a turn when Uma turned

twelve. His mother ed from a sudden

heart attack, and Uma’s family broke. His

father was devastated, Eito traumatized

from finding her, and Uma left out as his

two biggest heroes lost themselves in grief,

leaving Uma to deal with his own grief

alone. Uma struggled for a long time, and

turned to bad things to cope. By sixteen, he

was drinking and causing all sorts of

trouble. They had moved to Colombia to be

with his mom’s family and Uma hated it. He

was angry a lot, and dealt with it in bad

ways. His bad behavior continued, and only

worsened when his dad remarried. Things

took a drastic turn when one night, while

getting ready to drive at a green light, Uma

was t-boned at an intersection. His car

flipped twice and landed against a tree.

Uma’s back was crushed, and along with

torn muscles, Uma had a broken spinal

column and a slipped disc. He had a broken

leg and cracked rib. His injuries took two

full years to heal, and even after he was

discharged wasn’t fully recovered. He did

physical therapy for months after, but it

helped him change his life. He was a lot

less angry with the world, and began to

mend his relationship with his family.

After recovering from his car accident,

Uma’s relationships got better, and

physically he healed, but mentally he

struggled. He couldn’t get in a car and

drive without having a full mental

breakdown. His step mother, Camilla,

suggested therapy, and so within the week

Uma began it. He began taking anxiety

medication, and after a lot of talking, a lot

of processing, and a lot of patience, Uma

finally was working towards a functional

life. He relies on his routine, he takes his

medicine, and overall does well. It was after

that, after he was doing well mentally for a

long period of time, he decided he wanted

to start a family. But Uma wasn’t ready for

marriage. So he applied and became a

foster parent. Within the next month, Uma

was assigned to Amaia Diaz, and not a year

later, adopted the young girl. Amaia is his

pride and joy and his whole world, really.

His whole life revolves around her.

Parenting isn’t easy, but he flourishes with

it. He likes the chaos, the business, and the

love makes it all worth it.
