“Darling oh, dearest. I bade you to reconsider your stance on the matter.”

Her sharp nails raked across my chin. My breath stuttered as I felt the sensation of thousands of spider legs crawling on my back. No matter, I could hold steady. She would no longer hold control of me. It had been too long, too long that I let this wretch take control of my decisions. I needed that backbone, I couldn’t take any more of those leering stares when I followed behind in her shadow.

“Don’t think I can’t see those gears turning in that head of yours. Come now, sweetness, let’s put this to rest.” She coaxed gently, I could hear the sweet allure in her words. Those fond little notions of cajoling all to keep others complicit. How many other people did she have under her spell with a few of her honeyed words?

How long did I stay wrapped around her little finger?

I shook my head, no I couldn’t keep going like this.

Her eyes narrowed, it sent a pang of hurt through my chest. Her displeasure felt like a poisoned arrow slowly seeping its way up into my heart.

“Is that truly how you want to see this through, you insufferable beast?” She licked her teeth, setting them hard and gritting them. “It seems I coddled you long enough. You should have died long ago and this is the thanks I get?”

Her sharp laughter echoed in the cottage. I couldn’t help but take a step back. This was wrong, but this was the path I had to hold steady too.

“Let me show you exactly what menace I took under my wing.” She stepped forward faster than I could take another back. Her black-tipped nails struck the center of my forehead and I could feel it. The ricocheting pain I locked in that little box I never wanted to confront. I am a beast.
