This is one of the posts I have planned for this weekly tag, as I have a lot of under represented elemental powers or quirks that I know others would want to learn about, now to my favorite element that’s not talked about too much: shadow.

I personally associate the shadow element with the fifth element of spirit/Akasha.

In most religions the primordial being or beginning was nothing but darkness or empty space.

In my dedicated pantheon of Greek polytheism; aether, the shadow element, is also described as the element of space.

This all coordinates as one element when you dissect it. And aether is my personal dedication element. It’s not my personal elements, meaning the elements of my aura, but it’s the element of my magickal practice and dedicated religious beliefs which center around necromancy and the underworld. My aura is a dual elemental, which will be dove into later this week.

Connections that show the circle of interlocking attributes and power of the element of darkness, the element of spirit and the elemental of space/cosmos are the following:

-space, shadow, and darkness are all related to cold. When studying the popular Greek based interpretation of elements we learn elements have directions, colors and temperatures related to them. Even times of day!

-following this pattern we will see that across religions and beliefs there are three colors constantly associated with spirits, nocturnal energy and the powers of life and death and the cosmos are black, purple and silver. All cool colors associated with the night sky, moon or Hiding shadows.

-Space is proven to be both dark and cold. And something else: weightless. When studying the Greek derived tradition we learn that the “spirit element” aka aether, has no direction. And just...... is. It floats on its own plane of existence and adheres to no gravity or direction. Which is why darkness is the oldest and most popular version of scrying. Wether it be the blackness of lava rock (obsidian) or the dimensionless darkness of a new moon night.

-Darkness is as associated with creation as light is, if not more. In order to be born beings and organic materials are incubated or floating in darkness for what feels like forever. A lot of people believe that life starts before the actual act of birth or “creation”. So life technically starts in a floating nothingness of Aether. Rather it be rocks floating in cold space to become a planet, or a creature incubated in wet dark circle like an egg or womb. Which is also the symbol associated with aether/sprit and akasha across faiths. Wether it be a literal circle like in Greek faith or a spiral like in a lot of ancient sacred geometry. Or the circular and spiral shapes of flowers, a universal symbol of life which also technically begins in the cold darkness.

To end this post about my favorite and under appreciated element I will leave you with a very simple and invigorating shadow element meditation that I have practiced since I first was a baby witch. I found it on an old popular spell site back in the day. All you need is

🖤Room with door

🖤 nocturnal incense (optional) (scents like jasmine or musks)

🖤darkness

🖤Simple sounds like a metronome or instrumental music (I find this helps us neurodivergent who can’t clear our minds easily!)

Just focus on the darkness and keep your mind clear. In my experiences you will start to feel elated or “high” after a few minutes and will start to see movement in the blackness. For me the shadows start to vibrate before they will start to move in a circular motion. It’s a very Intoxicating ritual I recommend for all of those who practice “dark” magick or for those who

Follow a spirit or aether based faith.
